Best Eggs Benedict for Your Buck in Washington D.C.

For those of you who don’t know, Econ4U’s world headquarters is located here in our nation’s capital.  And this week we’re advertising on our favorite DC-centric blog, DCist!  So for our local audience I wanted to give an Econ4U tip that comes from years of experience brunching around the metro area:  Where to find the best eggs Benedict for your buck in Washington D.C.

The key to a good eggs Benedict is a lightly poached egg, a perfectly blended hollandaise sauce, and ham that doesn’t overpower the egg. Here’s how the best D.C. haunts stack up.

5. Tabard Inn, $13- Both my favorite brunch spot in Washington and the best eggs benny in town Tabard Inn, on 17th and N Street N.W, is the perfect spot for a Valentine’s Day brunch with your better half or a thrill for a mother visiting from out of town.  But it’s no place to maintain your budget.  On top of the $13 eggs benny, you can’t escape without having some of Tabard’s freshly fried donuts which are $1.50 a piece and $9 per half-dozen. (Memo to Tabard Inn: $9 per half-dozen is the same as $1.50 a piece, no need to make note of it.)

4. Ulah$10-  Ulah Bistro on U Street might seem like a fancy restaurant from the outside but it’s actually an affordable place to brunch.  Right across the street from historic Ben’s Chili Bowl (in case you are still a little hungry afterwards) Ulah is a great environment. And in this city, any eggs benny for $10 or less is alright with me.  The ham would have been perfect for a sandwich, but was a little too salty for my tastes when included in an eggs Benedict.

3. Monmartre, $9.95- Your budgetary concern with this Eastern Market favorite isn’t the eggs Benedict, priced at an affordable $9.95. It’s the temptation to sample their tasty French wines and unparalleled pâté. But if you ARE successful in resisting those financial pitfalls, the hollandaise sauce at Montmartre is as good as you’d expect from a French bistro.

2. Meze- $8.00- Eight bucks! For real.  Meze’s self-styled “famous” brunch includes eggs benedict that are as gooey as they are delightful. Nothing makes my Sunday mornings brighter than an english muffin drenched in hollandaise and egg yolk.  Don’t let anyone tell you they can’t do a good eggs benny in the Mediterranean (or at a Mediterranean place in Adams Morgan).

1. Commissary, $8.25- That $0.25 hike over Meze isn’t going to burst your piggy bank, and it’s worth every penny.  Commisary’s eggs Benedict never fails to impress and somehow the egg is poached more perfectly each time I go.  For the money you cannot find a better brunch in town. Combine the eggs Benedict with a fruit smoothie (my favorite is the Multi-tastic) and you have an affordable, tasty brunch in a great environment.  Order the sausage egg and cheese sandwich with breakfast potatoes and you can get out of there for under $5!  And keep an eye out for President Obama’s chief strategist, David Axelrod.  On Sunday mornings he is a post-Meet The Press frequenter of this Logan Circle hotspot.

Hey DCists- Did we miss any? What’s your favorite?

ANNIES! How can you forget Annies Paramount Steakhouse. They use the biggest English Muffins around, which allows for the maximum amount of soak-up potential of the perfect drippy middle. You’re right about Commissary though. I think their eggs benedict is the best dish on their menu.

Polly’s near 14th and U is the best. Awesome selection, inexpensive, great home fries, and pitchers of bloody marys. Be forewarned: cash only at this place.

Sarah I agree with you that the English Muffins are a key component to making a spectacular Eggs Benedict.
